Balau is also known as Alan, Bangkirai, and Selangan Batu. Is a hard, heavy timber originating from Shorea which is grown in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Its colour is yellowish-brown, brown, or reddish-brown wood with an interlocked grain, and a moderately fine and even texture, durable, knot-free hardwood which requires no treatment due to its natural resistance to fungal decay and insect attack.
Country of origin: Commonly found in throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines on low-lying and undulating land and hills. Batu timber has a unique pink, purple-brown or grey-brown heartwood and has a distinctive brushed streaked grain. .These hardwoods grow within a range of 30 to 60 metres in height. The timber is high in silica and makes a great decking timber material and is classed as an all weather timber.
